What is Chilblain Lupus? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Chilblain Lupus is a rare form of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE), mainly affecting the skin. It is characterized by painful and itchy skin lesions triggered by exposure to cold temperatures
  • Chilblain Lupus is in the subtype of CLE  termed chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CCLE). The risk factors for the condition are not well-defined, but the cause may be due to an abnormal immune response
  • Treating the condition may involve topical applications and systemic medications, including avoiding cold weather. With adequate management of Chilblain Lupus, the prognosis of the condition is good
