What is Central Ranges Taipan Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The central ranges taipan (Oxyuranus temporalis) is a highly venomous snake that is mostly found in the central mountain ranges of west central Australia. It is a newly discovered (third) species of taipan; the other two being the inland taipan and coastal taipan. The snake belongs to the Elapidae family, which generally includes slender and swift moving snakes. It resembles the western brown snakes of Australia
  • This relatively slender-bodied and robust snake can grow to between 5 and 5.5 feet in length. The snake has an elongated and narrow head, slightly slender neck, and a long whip-like tail. The body of the central ranges taipan is shiny and quite homogeneous in coloration, ranging in shades of brown (tan to red brown). The underbelly is generally lighter toned
  • There is not much information available on the central ranges taipan. It is known to inhabit the open and dry desert terrain and sandy mountain regions in the states of Western Australia, South Australia, and Northern Territory. It feeds on small mammals, such as rodents, particularly rats. The snake is mostly active during the day, but may prefer to be nocturnal during the hot summer months
  • The central ranges taipan is an elusive reptile that is largely found away from human settlements. If provoked, like the other taipans, this very agile snake may take a coiled posture and show a readiness to strike. Any further provocation can result in sudden and aggressive bites
  • Central Ranges Taipan Snake Bites can result in fatalities from systemic envenomation (venom injection through a bite), if the condition is left untreated, due to the presence of highly potent neurotoxins, myotoxins, and hemotoxins in the venom, which may be similar to the other taipans. The rate of envenoming may be over 80%
  • The signs and symptoms of Central Ranges Taipan Snake Bite can have a rapid onset, but may be non-specific and include headaches, sweating, weakness, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, and flaccid paralysis. Severe widespread symptoms and complications may involve the neurological, cardiovascular, hematological (blood-related), and kidney and urinary systems
  • Early administration of suitable antivenom (or antivenin) is the mainstay of treatment. Apart from this, symptomatic treatment is necessary, which may include the use of vasopressor agents, blood transfusion, and peritoneal dialysis. The prognosis of Central Ranges Taipan Snake Bite with prompt and effective therapy is usually good. However, untreated death rates may be high as 80% or over
