What is Caucasian Meadow Viper Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The Caucasian meadow viper (Vipera lotievi) is a venomous snake that is primarily found in Russia. The snake belongs to the viper family or Viperidae and is found in altitudes ranging from 4,000 to 8,900 feet (1,200 to 2,700 m). The Caucasian meadow viper can grow to a maximum size of about 2 feet or so, but the average adult size is around 1.5 feet
  • The viper is a land-dwelling reptile that is seen in thorny bushes and shrubs, woodlands, and sparsely covered forests that extend into subalpine mountain terrain. It has a slender to fairly heavy body with a short tail. The snake has a broad oval-shaped head that is somewhat indistinct from its neck and an upwards pointing snout
  • Caucasian meadow vipers may be light brown in color with dark zigzag stripe on the back. In some rare cases, the snake may be uniformly bronze in color with lighter sides and darker spots. The snake is diurnal in nature. It mostly preys on small mammals, including rodents, small lizards, and even large insects
  • In general, the snake is known to be docile and of a mild disposition. Caucasian Meadow Viper Snake Bites can result in systemic envenomation (venom injection) but fatalities are highly uncommon. The venom contains moderately potent hemotoxins that can cause bleeding issues and low blood pressure
  • The signs and symptoms of Caucasian Meadow Viper Snake Bite may include pain, bruising, and swelling at the bite site, which may be progressively followed by tissue necrosis, nausea and vomiting, abnormal breathing issues, dizziness, shock, and collapse, necessitating immediate treatment
  • Early administration of suitable antivenom (or antivenin) is the mainstay of treatment. Apart from this, symptomatic treatment is necessary, which may include pain medication, respiratory support, and blood transfusions, as required. The prognosis of Caucasian Meadow Viper Snake Bite with prompt and effective therapy is usually good; although, deaths have been reported in very rare cases
