What are Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation? (Also known as/Synonyms)

  • Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation are benign uncommon tumors.  As the name suggests, these benign adnexal neoplasms have a variety of combinations of eccrine, apocrine, and folliculosebaceous differentiation that can be observed when examined under the microscope by a pathologist
  • These tumors are also called complex adnexal neoplasms and may be seen across a broad age group of individuals. Tumors with eccrine differentiation form the majority, followed by tumors with folliculosebaceous differentiation. Presently, no cause or risk factors are identified for these tumors
  • In many cases, the tumors form in the dermal layers or subcutaneously. Solitary tumors may be observed in the head and neck region or limbs. No other significant signs and symptoms of Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation may be noted
  • These tumors may be diagnosed via tissue biopsy. Following diagnosis, the tumors may be surgically removed. The prognosis of Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation on suitable treatment is usually excellent

Who gets Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation? (Age and Sex Distribution)

  • Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation are rare tumors that may be seen across a wide age range of individuals
  • It appears to be more common in males than females
  • No racial or ethnic group preference is observed

What are the Risk Factors for Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation? (Predisposing Factors)

  • The risk factors for Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation are presently unknown

It is important to note that having a risk factor does not mean one will get the condition. A risk factor increases one's chances of getting a condition compared to an individual without the risk factors. Some risk factors are more important than others.

Also, not having a risk factor does not mean an individual will not get the condition. It is always important to discuss the effect of risk factors with your healthcare provider.

What are the Causes of Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation? (Etiology)

The cause of the formation of Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation is not well understood.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation?

The signs and symptoms of Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation include:

  • The tumors are usually single and slow-growing
  • They typically occur in the head and neck area, arms, and legs
  • The tumors may be observed in the skin or below the skin (dermal or subcutaneous)

How are Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation Diagnosed?

The following can be used to diagnose Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation:

  • Complete physical exam and evaluation of medical history
  • Blood tests, as necessary
  • Tissue biopsy: When examined under a microscope, the pathologist will note a combination of sebaceous, apocrine, eccrine, and follicular differentiation. Such tumors can cause diagnostic issues for the pathologist
  • Pathological differential diagnoses include the following tumors:
    • Basal cell carcinoma
    • Chondroid syringoma
    • Sebaceous adenoma
    • Trichoepithelioma

Many clinical conditions may have similar signs and symptoms. Your healthcare provider may perform additional tests to rule out other clinical conditions to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

What are the possible Complications of Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation?

No significant complications are generally associated with Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation. In some individuals, the following may be noted:

  • Cosmetic concerns in some cases
  • Some cutaneous adnexal neoplasms are known to be malignant (hence, a definitive diagnosis to establish the nature of the tumor is essential)
  • Incompletely removed tumors may tend to recur

How are Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation Treated?

Treating Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation involves complete tumor excision. A complete removal usually results in no recurrence.

How can Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation be Prevented?

Presently, it is not possible to prevent the development of Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation as the cause is unknown.

What is the Prognosis of Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation? (Outcomes/Resolutions)

The prognosis of individuals with Benign Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors with Combined Folliculosebaceous, Apocrine, and Eccrine Differentiation is generally excellent with adequate treatment (tumor removal through surgery).
