What is Banded Cobra Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The banded cobra (Naja annulifera) is a moderately venomous snake found in the southeastern region of sub-Saharan Africa that includes the countries of Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe. This large reptile belongs to the Elapidae family (genus Naja or cobra), which generally includes slender and swift moving snakes
  • This relatively stout and robust-bodied snake can grow from around 4.5 feet to over 8 feet in length. It has a medium-length tail. The snake has a flat broad head, pointed snout, and medium-sized eyes; the head and neck are slightly distinct from each other. Like most cobras, the head and neck of the banded cobra can spread into a long hood; the throat may display a dark brown band
  • The snake has a glossy body that is olive green to yellow-brown in color; its underbelly may be yellow with dark brown patterns. Some specimens may show a black body with yellow bands. The banded cobra is known to markedly change in coloration during its early growing phase
  • The snake is terrestrial and feeds on lizards, toads, birds eggs, and even other snakes. It prefers to hunt during the nighttime (nocturnal). The snake inhabits dry savannahs, sub-tropical woodlands, and often near cultivated lands in the endemic regions
  • Contact with humans is not uncommon; the snake is known to frequent poultry farms at nights. Nevertheless, the banded cobra is generally non-aggressive and often may “play dead” if disturbed. When cornered, the snake can hold its ground and display its hood by raising its forebody. The snake typically bites only when sufficiently provoked; in such cases, the snake can inject large quantities of venom into its victim
  • Banded Cobra Snake Bites can result in fatalities due to systemic envenomation (venom injection through a bite), if the condition is left untreated. The venom is believed to contain potent neurotoxins. In some cases, significant symptoms may be noted including tissue necrosis and probably flaccid paralysis. The signs and symptoms may include moderate to severe local pain, swelling, and blistering at the bite site
  • Early administration of suitable antivenom (or antivenin) is the mainstay of treatment. Apart from this, symptomatic treatment is necessary, which may include pain medication, wound care, intravenous fluid administration, and respiratory support. The prognosis of Banded Cobra Snake Bite with prompt and effective therapy is usually good; but without adequate treatment, deaths have been reported
