What is Bamboo Pitviper Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The bamboo pitviper (Trimeresurus gramineus) is a moderately venomous snake found in central and south India. It is also known as the Indian green tree viper. The snake belongs to the subspecies of pit vipers, family Viperidae. Pit vipers are termed so, due to the presence of certain heat-sensing organs located in a recess/notch between their eyes and nostrils. The bamboo pitviper can grow from around 2.5 feet to nearly 4 feet in length
  • The pitviper preys on a variety of animals including small mammals (rodents), frogs, lizards, and small birds. It is a nocturnal hunting reptile that inhabits bamboo fields and lowland hill forests with less dense to thick vegetation (usually near waterbodies), at elevations of up to 1,300 feet (about 400 m). The snake is generally found on plants and trees during the daytime
  • The snake has a slender to medium-sized body with a short red-brown tail. The head of the snake is broad, flat, and triangular-shaped, and distinct from its neck. The body color of the bamboo pitviper is uniformly leaf-green to brown-green with irregular dark flecks; the belly may be pale green to yellow and separated from the body by a thin dividing line along the sides that runs up to the snake’s mouth/jaw
  • Human contact with the bamboo pitviper is not uncommon; it may be found close to human settlements and on agricultural lands. Even though slow and timid by nature, the snake may bite rapidly under slight provocation. Bamboo Pitviper Snake Bites can cause moderate to severe envenomation (venom injection) that may rarely result in deaths without early treatment. The venom is a potent mix of hemotoxins that may cause variable symptoms including severe bleeding issues and shock
  • The signs and symptoms of Bamboo Pitviper Snake Bite may include moderate to severe localized effects, such as pain at the bite site, swelling, and blistering. Systemic symptoms may include tissue necrosis, headache, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, lightheadedness, and collapse
  • Early administration of suitable antivenom (or antivenin) is the mainstay of treatment. Apart from this, symptomatic treatment is necessary, which may include pain medication, intravenous fluid administration, blood transfusion, and respiratory support, as needed. The prognosis of Bamboo Pitviper Snake Bite with prompt and effective therapy is usually good; without proper treatment, the condition may result in fatalities
