What is Aspic Viper Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The aspic viper (Vipera aspis) is a moderately venomous snake found in many parts of western and some parts of southern Europe that includes the countries of France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Spain, and Switzerland. The snake belongs to the viper family or Viperidae and is found in altitudes ranging from mean sea level to about 9,800 feet (3,000 m). There are several subspecies of Vipera aspis
  • The aspic viper can grow to reach nearly 3 feet or so in length, but the average adult size is about 2 feet. The average size and coloring pattern of the snake can vary from one geographical region to another. The viper is a land-dwelling reptile that is seen in a wide range of habitats including dry rocky hillsides and wet mountain forests
  • The snake has a medium-sized to slender body with a short tail that may be tipped yellow/orange. It has a broad triangular-shaped head that is distinct from the neck, and an upwards pointing snout. The color of the aspic viper may be light brown, red-brown, yellow, grayish, or even black. A series of elongated dark patterns may be observed from the head to tail; the head may have a prominent “X” marking
  • Aspic vipers are nocturnal in nature during the summer months, but diurnal during the colder seasons. The snake mostly preys on small mammals and sometimes on birds and lizards. In general, the snake is timid and docile; although, if threatened, it does not hesitate to hold its ground and strike quickly
  • Aspic Viper Snake Bites can result in systemic envenomation (venom injection) that may occasionally result in fatalities without prompt and adequate treatment. The venom is known to contain potent hemotoxins that can cause moderate to severe bleeding issues and low blood pressure
  • The signs and symptoms of Aspic Viper Snake Bite may include pain, bruising, and swelling at the bite site, which may be progressively followed by tissue necrosis, nausea and vomiting, abnormal breathing issues, dizziness, shock, and collapse, necessitating immediate treatment
  • Early administration of suitable antivenom (or antivenin) is the mainstay of treatment. Apart from this, symptomatic treatment is necessary, which may include pain medication, respiratory support, and blood transfusions, as required. The prognosis of Aspic Viper Snake Bite with prompt and effective therapy is usually good
