What is Armenian Mountain Viper Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The Armenian mountain viper (Montivipera raddei) is a moderately venomous snake that is found in the Middle Eastern and Western Asian countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, and Turkey. The snake belongs to the viper family or Viperidae and is found in altitudes ranging from mean sea level to 9,800 feet (3,000 m). Armenian mountain vipers can grow to a maximum size of slightly over 3.5 feet, but the average adult size is less than 2 feet
  • The viper is a land-dwelling reptile that is usually seen in rocky bush terrains, open grasslands, or less dense wooded mountain (consisting of oak and junipers); the snake has been observed on agricultural lands too. It has a medium-sized heavy body with a very short yellow-orange tail. The head of the snake is large with a blunt snout, almost triangular in shape, and quite distinct from its neck
  • The Armenian mountain viper is seen in a variety of colors including gray-brown, gray-black, or black with a pattern of red-orange spots, which may form zigzag patterns on some specimens. On the sides, a row of dark irregular spots may be seen. The snake’s belly is usually dark gray with black markings. The snake is mostly diurnal in nature. It preys on small rodents (mice), other mammals, lizards, large insects, and even birds
  • The snake is generally sluggish and slow-moving; if threatened, it tends to flee and quickly seek shelter. However, the snake can become very aggressive and strike after giving warning signs (by making continuous hissing sounds). Armenian Mountain Viper Snake Bites can result in systemic envenomation (venom injection) but fatalities are highly uncommon. The venom contains potent hemotoxins and neurotoxins that can cause seizures, bleeding issues that may be severe, and low blood pressure
  • The signs and symptoms of Armenian Mountain Viper Snake Bite may include pain, bruising, and swelling at the bite site, which may be progressively followed by tissue necrosis, headache, nausea and vomiting, abnormal breathing issues, minor paralysis, dizziness, shock, respiratory issues, and collapse, necessitating immediate treatment
  • Early administration of suitable antivenom (or antivenin) is the mainstay of treatment. Apart from this, symptomatic treatment is necessary, which may include pain medication, wound care, respiratory support, and blood transfusions. The prognosis of Armenian Mountain Viper Snake Bite with prompt and effective therapy is usually good; deaths have been rarely reported in the absence of proper treatment
