What is Amazon Coral Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The Amazon coral snake (Micrurus spixii) is a venomous snake found in a few nations of South America mainly Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. The snake belongs to the Elapidae family that generally includes slender and swift moving snakes, of genus coral snakes (Micrurus) that form a large group of elegant and ‘mostly’ brightly colored and banded venomous reptiles
  • The following subspecies have been reported for Micrurus spixii in scientific literature:
    • Micrurus spixii martiusi or Martius's coral snake
    • Micrurus spixii obscurus: Currently, it has been elevated to a full species and is termed Micrurus obscurus or black-neck Amazonian coral snake
    • Micrurus spixii princeps or Bolivian Amazonian coral snake
    • Micrurus spixii spixii or Central Amazon coral snake
  • Despite the above, there is still some debate among the experts on their classification, and only two main species - Micrurus spixii and Micrurus obscurus are reportedly recognized. Nevertheless, this is more a matter of taxonomy (nomenclature) and does not in any way change their description, behavior, or venomous nature of the Amazon coral snakes
  • The snake usually grows between 2.5 to 3 feet in length, while some species are longer at 5 feet or more. Like many coral snakes, the Amazon coral snake is characterized by alternate yellow-red-black bands of shiny scales that completely encircle the body; adults may show more orange than red bands. The head of the snake may display a black hood
  • The body of the snake is cylindrical and slender to stout, depending on the subspecies. The head and neck are indistinct from each other, and the snake has a short tail that may mimic the head. The snake is mostly found in tropical rainforests and in grasslands, savannahs, farmlands and plantations, at altitudes of up to 3,600 feet (1,100 m). The Amazon coral snake preys on small snakes and lizards
  • The snake is described as being very irritable, and Amazon Coral Snake Bites can sometimes result in fatalities from systemic envenomation (venom injection through a bite) in the absence of treatment. The potent myotoxic-neurotoxic venom released can cause systemic effects including significant muscle damage and respiratory distress
  • The signs and symptoms of Amazon Coral Snake Bite may include mild effects at the bite site such as pain and swelling. As various body systems gets rapidly affected by the venom, it can result in widespread symptoms including slurred speech, vision defects, low blood pressure, heart rhythm disorders, and kidney failure
  • Early administration of suitable antivenom (or antivenin) is the mainstay of treatment. Apart from this, symptomatic treatment is necessary, which may include pain medication, respiratory support, and peritoneal dialysis, as required. The prognosis of Amazon Coral Snake Bite with prompt and effective therapy is usually good
