What is Positional Electronystagmography?

Electronystagmography (ENG) is used to evaluate patients with vertigo and help diagnose other hearing and vision conditions. Positional Electronystagmography is a form of electronystagmography test.

The following are the features of Positional Electronystagmography:

In this procedure, the patient is asked to move their entire body along with their eyes. For example, the healthcare provider may ask the patient to move their head or body quickly. As the patient moves, their eye movement is also tracked and measured
The eye movement measured during the active movement part of the procedure is compared to a baseline eye measurement from when the patient is standing still. Irregularities in eye movement may be indicative of an underlying neural condition

Some of the other types of electronystagmography tests include:

Calibration
Pendulum-tracking
Gaze nystagmus
Water caloric

There are some minimal risks associated with performing the electronystagmography procedure; some individuals are known to experience dizziness and nausea following the procedure.
