What is Nasoalveolar Molding (NAM)?

Nasoalveolar Moulding (NAM) is a procedure used to treat both cleft lip and palate. It is a device that is placed at the back of a baby's mouth. The NAM gradually brings the gums closer together and aids in closing the space created by the cleft. "Naso" refers to the nose, "alveolar" to the gum line, and "molding" to form.

Unlike some previous approaches, the molding plate does not press or strain the delicate tissues of the infant. The NAM just assists in gently directing gum development. The plate will fit comfortably against the roof of the infant's mouth. The molding plate is secured to the baby's face with little orthodontic rubber bands.

Each week, the orthodontist gradually alters the contour of the teeth by molding the plastic. Each modification is minute, yet it begins to direct the expanding gums of the infant. Once the gum cleft is sufficiently narrow (about a quarter-inch), a post is affixed to the molding plate and pushed through the nose. This post is gradually moved upward and outward each week, to raise the nose and open the nostril.
