What is Electroretinogram?

An Electroretinogram or Electroretinography is a test performed in clinic settings to measure the electrical response of the eye’s light-sensitive cells, commonly referred to as rods and cones.

The steps involved in performing an Electroretinogram include the following:

The patient is provided with numbing eye drops. Afterwards, electrodes are placed on each eye
Electrical activity from the corneal electrodes are compared to the activity of an electrode placed at another side of the body such as ear, forehead, temple, etc.
The provider then observes and measures the electrical activity of the eye in response to external flashes of light

Having an abnormal retinal response to the light stimulus may be indicative of a variety of conditions such as the following:

Arteriosclerosis
Congenital night blindness
Vitamin A deficiency
Giant cell arteritis
Rod-cone dystrophy
Retinal detachment
