What is Autism Screening Tool?

Autism Screening Tool is a test administered by pediatricians to identify early signs of autism in children. Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by social impairment, communication difficulties, and repetitive behavior. Some of the signs of autism may include:

Showing minimal interest in people, activities, or objects
Speech delays
Major emotional/behavioral responses to events that should typically not cause them
Avoidance of physical contact

Through observation and questionnaires used to screen for autism, a healthcare provider can refer a child to a specialist for an official autism diagnosis. Some of the common screening tools used include:

Ages and stages questionnaire (ASQ)
Modified checklist for autism in toddlers (M-CHAT)
Parents’ evaluation of developmental status (PEDS)
Screening tool for autism in toddlers and young children (STAT)

It is important to note that an early recognition of the condition can positively impact the outcomes.
