What is Artificial Surfactant Therapy?

Artificial Surfactant Therapy is used to treat respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in infants. Surfactants are compounds that line the alveolar surface of the lungs and helps to keep the alveoli open by reducing surface tension. By keeping the alveoli open throughout the respiratory cycle, surfactants help a newborn efficiently take in oxygen. In Artificial Surfactant Therapy, an exogenous surfactant is usually administered via a catheter into the trachea. This therapy has proved to be highly effective and safe in treating newborns with RDS. There is decreased risk associated with surfactant therapy for lung collapse, pulmonary emphysema, and chronic lung disease.
