Quick Summary:

  • Epithelioid Sarcoma of Vulva is a highly infrequent soft tissue tumor involving the epithelioid cells (which line the blood vessels) and connective tissues. It has a high malignancy potential (i.e., capacity to metastasize)
  • There are 2 variants of epithelioid sarcomas that may be noted in the vulva, even though both are very rare tumor types:
    • Classical-Type Epithelioid Sarcoma of Vulva: It is the less-aggressive type and not many cases have been recorded
    • Proximal-Type Epithelioid Sarcoma of Vulva: It is the more-aggressive type and a few cases have been recorded
  • In general, the proximal type more often occurs in the genital region, unlike the classical or usual type. It is also observed to grow faster, recur more frequently following surgery, and metastasize at a higher incidence rate
  • Epithelioid sarcoma tumors may form superficially or be found deep within the body tissues. Vulvar Epithelioid Sarcomas often presents as a rapidly-growing mass on the vulva (area around the external opening of the vagina) in young and middle-aged women
  • The signs and symptoms include pain during sex and abnormal bleeding from the tumor, since they are often known to ulcerate. The complications are dependent upon the stage of the cancer and may also include treatment-associated complications
  • Treatment for Epithelioid Sarcoma of Vulva is mainly through surgery and other supplementary treatment measures. The prognosis depends on the cancer stage and overall health of the individual. In general, the prognosis is guarded
