Anise, also called Pimpinella anisum or aniseed, is a flowering plant in the family Apiaceae native to the eastern Mediterranean region and Southwest Asia. This herb should not be confused with the star anise though they do share similarities in taste. Anise possesses very distinct sweet and aromatic liquor-like flavor that gives the oil a distinct fragrance to remember. This ancient plant has many medicinal purposes. Luckily, there are many potential health benefits. More research on humans still needs to be conducted.

Here are the 7 potential health benefits of anise.

1.     Anise may be an immune stimulant to fight infection.

Animal research published in the Pakistan Journal of Biological Sciences has suggested that aniseed extract in broiler chicks has increased growth performance and immunity.

2.     Anise may help you urine more.

People may believe it is a bad thing to urine often. However, urinating helps your body get rid of many toxins and waste products. Research, published in Life Sciences, suggests that anise oil has an anti-diuretic effect through a similar mechanism in the kidney.

3.     Anise increases glucose absorption.

The same research study published in Life Sciences concluded that anise oil enhanced glucose (sugar) absorption in rats. Those with type-2 diabetes have trouble absorbing sugar. Anise may help them level their blood sugar levels.

4.     Anise may help your airway obstruction to breathe more easily.

An animal study published in the Canadian Journal of Veterinary Research suggests that the herbal composite containing garlic, white horehound, boneset, aniseed, fennel, licorice, thyme, and hyssop reduced the clinical signs of recurrent airway obstruction.

5.     Anise may help women and their reproductive health.

Anise has the potential to regulate the menstrual cycle in women. Anise helps relieve menstrual cramps and facilitate birth.

6.     Anise may help you cope with seizures.

Research published in the Scientific Journal of Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences have shown that anise oil could potentially increase the delay in the onset of seizures in the mice which had been pretreated with different doses of the extract.

7.     Anise may have antimicrobial properties to fight infections.

A study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that aniseed extracts inhibit the growth of diverse strains of bacteria, fungi, and virus. It is considered beneficial in the prevention and treatment of microbial infections.
