A Heart attack is one of the leading causes of death among men and women globally today. Apart from maintaining a healthy weight and indulging in regular exercise, eating healthy can also reduce our chances of acquiring harmful cardiovascular conditions, such as a heart attack.

A food may be defined as a superfood when it is loaded with nutrients and has many health benefits. Certain superfoods are powerful enough to lower our cholesterol levels and reduce our risk of getting a heart attack and various other fatal heart conditions. Mostly these are plant-based and do not have any side effects. These life-altering superfoods are easily available in our local supermarkets too.

How does a diet enriched with superfoods help us from heart attacks?

According to Dr. Elizabeth Somer, author of The Essential Guide to Vitamins and Minerals, what we eat has a profound impact on how we feel and our health in future. Even people who are fit and healthy can make a few changes and the impact it will have on their health may be great. A recent study published by her suggests that 50-70% of suffering caused by heart attacks can be eliminated, if we watch what we eat and include superfoods in our diet regularly.

It was found out that by inclusion of superfoods in our daily meal, we can lower the risks of heart attack, hypertension, and coronary blockage, by up to 70%. A healthy diet incorporating a variety of ‘unprocessed’ superfoods in an essential quantity can help us maintain our weight, fight cardiovascular problems, and enhance our overall health.

How do you incorporate superfoods into your diet to fight heart disorders?

A research study published in Medical Journal of Circulation in 2012, established how people who eat a diet rich in superfoods, like certain fresh fruits enriched with antioxidants, green leafy vegetables, and fish, lower their risk of getting a heart attack or stroke by as much as 50%. According to a study led by Dr. Walter Willett, Chairman of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health, even medicines can only cut the risk of heart attack by 20%, but a diet enriched with superfoods like salmon, blueberries, oatmeal, and citrus fruits, can help you stay heart healthy.

Consuming unsaturated fats like olive oil and omega 3 fatty acids will benefit you by decreasing triglyceride levels and inhibiting plaque formation as well as blood clotting. A diet rich in super foods like soluble fiber from legumes and nuts can help lower your LDL cholesterol and maintain your heart health.

A truly healthy diet consists of a broad range of fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes and fiber that will have a positive impact on your heart. So by including plenty of superfoods in your regular diet, you can limit your chances of a heart attack and stay healthy.
