Peekay International Inc. 56 12 56th Street, Maspeth, NY is recalling its 7 ounce and 14 ounce packages of “SWAN DRY YELLOW DATES” and “KESHAV DRY YELLOW DATES” food treats because they contained undeclared sulfites. Consumers who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product.

The recalled “SWAN DRY YELLOW DATES” and “KESHAV DRY YELLOW DATES” were distributed nationwide in retail stores and through mail orders. The products come in a 7 ounce, clear plastic package and 14 ounce, clear plastic package. The UPC code for the “KESHAV DRY YELLOW DATES” 7 ounce package is 643864233124 and the UPC code for the 14 ounce package is 643864233131. The UPC code for the “SWAN DRY YELLOW DATES” 7 ounce package is 643864136623 and the UPC code for the 14 ounce package is 643864136630.

No illnesses or allergic reactions involving this product have been reported to date.

The recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis by Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of sulfites in the 14 ounce packages of “KESHAV Dry Yellow Dates” which were not declared on the label. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit serve reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. Analysis of the “KESHAV Dry Yellow Dates” revealed they contained 16.815 milligrams per serving.
