The Cannabinoids Urine Test helps detect cannabinoid byproducts, namely carboxy THC, in urine. This is undertaken mainly using immunoassay methods. It is used to detect marijuana use.

What is Cannabinoids Urine Test? (Background Information)

  • Cannabinoids are the compounds in marijuana that produce its psychoactive effects. There are 61 known cannabinoids - the most common being delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol
  • Marijuana refers to the drug produced from the leaves and flowering tops of the Cannabis sativa plant. Marijuana is smoked or ingested, and causes hallucinations and euphoria
  • Carboxy THC is the major breakdown product of cannabinoids. Its levels in blood peak 10 minutes after ingestion and 1 hour after ingestion
  • Carboxy THC begins to be excreted via urine 3 days after consumption of marijuana. The excretion continues for 30 to 60 days
  • Cannabinoids are fat-soluble, which means that they accumulate in the fat tissues. Heavy marijuana users may store THC in their fat cells, resulting in release for substantial amounts of time

Preparation required: It is recommended to drink 6 to 8 glasses of water or other fluids prior to the test.
