The onion (Allium cepa) also known as the bulb onion or common onion, is a vegetable that is the most widely cultivated species of the genus Allium. This vegetable has been used since ancient times in Egypt and is still popular today in many cuisines around the world. Onions possess many promising medicinal purposes because of the nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and organic compounds contained in them, including sulfuric compounds and quercetin in the essential oils.

Here are the 7 health benefits of onions.

1.     Onions can help you treat your acne.

Onions contain anti-inflammatory properties that reduce redness and swelling acne causes. Onion juice mixed with honey or olive oil could be an excellent treatment for the symptoms of acne.

2.     Onions can enhance your sex life.

A study suggests that onions have the ability to improve one’s sex life by increasing one’s sex drive and libido.

3.     Onions can help individuals with earaches.

If one has an earache, add a few drops of onion juice to improve an earache. Tinnitus or the ringing sound in the ear may be cured by applying onion juice through a piece of cotton wool.

4.     Onions can help prevent cancer.

Onions have a powerful antioxidant called quercetin that has been shown to reduce and even avoid the spread of cancer. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals that can mutate healthy cells into cancerous cells.

5.     Onions can help manage type 2 diabetes.

Chromium is a mineral found in onions that helps the body regulate blood sugar levels and promote a slow and controlled release of glucose to the muscles and the body cells.

6.     Onions can assist in strengthening the immune system and fight infection.

Onions are rich in vitamin C, which can give your immune system a boost to fight off toxins and other foreign objects. Also, the phytochemicals present in onions act as a stimulant to vitamin C within the body.

7.     Onions are great for oral hygiene.
