What is Warty Dyskeratoma? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Warty Dyskeratoma is a rare benign skin tumor, which usually occurs in adults, on the head and neck area
  • They may occur as nodules or papules on the skin. The tumor can be present as a single nodule or as multiple nodules
  • The cause and risk factors for Warty Dyskeratoma remains unknown
  • A complete surgical excision of Warty Dyskeratoma is considered curative. The prognosis of the skin tumor on its surgical removal is excellent

  • Warty Dyskeratoma is usually noticed in middle-age to elderly individuals

  • The skin lesion is typically between 1-10 mm in size
  • The most common sites of Warty Dyskeratomas include the head and neck region

The following diagnostic tools may be helpful in diagnosing Warty Dyskeratoma:

  • A thorough physical examination and a complete medical history are very crucial
  • Dermoscopy: Dermoscopy is a diagnostic tool where a dermatologist examines the skin using a special magnified lens
  • Tissue biopsy of the tumor: A tissue biopsy is performed and sent to a laboratory for a pathological examination, who examines the biopsy under a microscope. After putting together clinical findings, special studies on tissues (if needed) and with microscope findings, the pathologist arrives at a definitive diagnosis

  • The presence of dirt on the body is not a causative factor for the condition. However, it helps to be clean and hygienic, which may help the condition from getting worse
