Estrogen levels in women begin to disappear once they enter menopause. As a result of tapering estrogen levels, the women’s cardiovascular risks being to increase.

A new study from the University of Copenhagen shows that team sports can make up for the estrogen loss due to menopause by reducing blood pressure and helping the cardiovascular system.

Published in The American Journal of Physiology, the researchers investigated the effects of estrogen in women of the same age before and after menopause. The study examined the effects of 12-week floorball training among post-menopausal women since floorball have been known to improve the cardiovascular system in women.

In just 12 weeks of twice weekly practices, the women’s conditions had improved and their risk for stroke decreased 40 percent. Blood vessel function increased as well with a 20 percent decrease in markers associated with arteriosclerosis.

Postdoc Michael Nyberg believes that the advantage of team sports is that the participants have fun, and focus less on how physically demanding the activity is.

“Floorball training is intense, with many short sprints, directional changes and a high pulse achieved – but participants don't really pay attention to all of this. This high intensity is one of the primary reasons that these women were able to achieve such great health benefits in just 12 weeks,” explains Nyberg.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the adverse effects of diminishing estrogen levels and how team sports can reverse those effects.
