Summary of the study:

Reported by DoveMed on Oct 18th 2013

According to a recent study (October 16, 2013) published in Journal Neurology, researchers at The Johns Hopkins University have reported that measuring CSF β-amyloid 1–42 (Aβ1–42), total tau (t-tau), and phosphorylated tau (p-tau), in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) may predict onset of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which can be seen in pre-clinical phase of Alzheimer’s disease. The study was performed on 265 participants, who were initially normal, but later developed MCI. The finding showed that a mean time of 5.41 years elapsed between the baseline testing, to development of mild cognitive impairment in the studied cohort.

The conclusion of the study was that testing CSF for specific biomarkers, may predict the onset of development of Alzheimer’s disease, long before an individual shows signs and symptoms of dementia.
