The topic Candida Infective Endocarditis you are seeking is a synonym, or alternative name, or is closely related to the medical condition Fungal Endocarditis.

Quick Summary:

  • Infective endocarditis is an infection of the heart valves or the heart’s inner lining, known as the endocardium. Infective endocarditis is usually caused by bacteria or fungi
  • A Fungal Endocarditis occurs when a fungal infection from other parts of the body enters the bloodstream (usually resulting in fungemia/fungaemia) and attacks the lining of the heart or the heart valves. It is mostly associated with intravenous drug abuse and hospitalized patients receiving corticosteroid therapy
  • Fungal Endocarditis can occur at any age, but it generally affects individuals older than 50 years of age. Common organisms associated with this infection include Candida and Histoplasma capsulatum
  • The signs and symptoms of Fungal Endocarditis are highly variable ranging from low-grade fever, fatigue, and joint pain, to severe features that include stroke (sudden weakness of limbs or face due to disruption of brain’s blood supply), cardiac arrhythmias, and damage to kidney and spleen
  • The treatment of Fungal Endocarditis is based on the specific fungi type causing the infection. The mainstay of treatment is through antifungal medication; surgery may be required in some cases
  • Untreated Fungal Endocarditis can lead to an extremely poor prognosis and can almost always be fatal. With appropriate early diagnosis and treatment, the outcomes are better. However, the prognosis also depends upon a set of factors including the type of fungi causing infection, the health status of the individual, and the presence of any heart illness, among other factors
