Dr. Tom Sebo, Mayo Clinic Pathologist and Member of DoveMed Editorial Board, Passes AwayDoveMed regrets to inform that, Dr. Tom Sebo, a Mayo Clinic pathologist and Member of DoveMed Editorial Board, passed away peacefully on March 3rd 2016. He was surrounded by his family.Dr. Sebo was an excellent pathologist, a mentor, and a fantastic human being. He was ill before his passing.Thomas J Sebo was a board certified Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist. He worked at Mayo Clinic as a Rochester Surgical Pathologist and Cytopathologist for 21 years. Dr. Sebo received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biosciences and Mathematics from the University of Iowa and Eckerd College in 1976, and his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Chemistry from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 1982. He completed his post-doctoral work as a National Institutes of Health Fellow at the University of Wisconsin in Madison from 1982 to 1983.In 1983, he continued his education at Southern Illinois University Medical School in Springfield. In 1987, Dr. Sebo went to Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medicine for post-graduate training, first, in Internal Medicine from 1987 to 1988, then in Pathology as an Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Resident from 1988 to 1992. On June 30th of 1992, he did a six-month Surgical Pathology Fellowship at Mayo and joined Mayo Clinic Rochester’s staff as an Associate Consultant on January 1, 1993.Dr. Sebo was a Consultant in Anatomic Pathology and Cytopathology at Mayo Clinic and a Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the Mayo Medical School at the time of his passing. Dr. Sebo published over 192 scientific articles in a variety of fields including urologic, endocrine, and molecular pathology, and cytopathology.He was Section Head of Mayo Clinic Rochester’s Frozen Section Laboratory and Urologic Pathology, and Endocrine Pathology (current). He was Vice-Chair of Research for Anatomic Pathology, and Chairs of Endocrine and Genitourinary (current) Disease Oriented Groups (DOG) for the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP), which focuses on bringing forward new ideas for clinical testing from promising basic research activities at Mayo. He was the Chair of the Tissue Request Acquisition Group (TRAG) for Anatomic Pathology pertaining to the procurement and logistical support of tissues retrieved from surgical pathology specimens funneled through Mayo Rochester’s Frozen Section Laboratories as part of IRB-approved research projects.He began, developed, and chaired Mayo Clinic’s Molecular Cytology and Imaging Laboratory, which combines digital image analysis (DIA) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). It has evolved into a million dollar plus clinical operation with a strong research arm. Dr. Sebo was an excellent pathologist who was always willing to help. His vision and thoughts will guide us at DoveMed. His mentorship to new budding medical writers brought vigor and enthusiasm.Above all, Dr. Sebo was a fine individual and a friend who will be sorely missed. May his soul rest in peace.
