Biographical Information
Dr. Kourtidis is a Molecular Biologist investigating the fundamental molecular and cellular mechanisms of tumorigenesis. He obtained his PhD in Molecular Biology and Evolution from the School of Biology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He then moved to the US and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the GenNYSis Center for Excellence in Cancer Genomics of the State University of New York at Albany, where he became specialized in the Functional Genomics of cancer. In 2009, he moved to the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center at Mayo Clinic in Florida, where he is currently a Research Associate and Instructor of Cancer Biology. His research interests focus on the role of cell-cell adhesion complexes in cell behavior and tumorigenesis, with particular emphasis on the newly identified interplay of adhesion complexes with the RNA interference (RNAi) machinery. Dr. Kourtidis was a recipient of the highly prestigious Bodossaki Foundation Fellowship in Greece and of the Jay and Deanie Stein Career Development Award for Cancer Research at Mayo Clinic. He is a member of the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB). Dr. Kourtidis believes that communication between scientists of different disciplines, as well as with the public, is of imperative importance in our time. Science has become more than ever an every day topic, highlighting the tremendous progress in every scientific discipline and science’s intercalation with society. This is even more apparent in the field of biomedical sciences, which directly affects people’s quality of living. Therefore, communicating our research and knowledge is one of our responsibilities as scientists and DoveMed is an excellent venue for performing this.
